The Modern Era Begins

The roots of Syracuse Men’s Hockey trace back to the early 1960s, when the program began as a small club known as the Syracuse University Hockey Association (SUHA).

The inaugural 1960 team featured just eight players competing in a limited schedule. By 1961, the program had grown to 15 players and expanded competition. In 1962, the team gained formal university recognition, with Dr. Richard A. Johnson serving as the first non-player coach.

This era also saw the formation of the Finger Lakes Collegiate Hockey League, with Syracuse playing a leading role in its creation.

These foundational teams established the structure, culture, and ambition that would shape decades of success to come.
