Syracuse University Club Kendo is based on a modern martial art and competitive sport developed from traditional Japanese swordsmanship. It emphasizes the cultivation of the mind and body and the development of a strong character through training. Founded in 2007, Syracuse University Club Kendo is devoted to promoting the spirit of the Japanese martial art by providing a unique cultural experience to the Syracuse University and SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry (ESF) community, as well as regularly participating in intercollegiate tournaments throughout the year, such as the Harvard Invitational Shoryuhai Intercollegiate Kendo Tournament and the Columbia Shishihai Tournament. In addition, Club Kendo hosts its very own Shoshinsha Championship Tournament at the end of every semester to provide members the opportunity to demonstrate the skills they have developed.
Syracuse University Club Kendo is affiliated with the Greater Northeastern United States Kendo Federation, a member of the All United States Kendo Federation (AUSKF). The AUSKF officially represents the United States of America, excluding the state of Hawaii, in the International Kendo Federation.
All current Syracuse University and SUNY ESF students are welcome to join weekly practices at Flanagan Gymnasium. Practices are typically twice a week and comprise around a dozen members. No prior experience is needed, but to become an official member of Syracuse University Club Kendo, Syracuse University or SUNY ESF enrollment is required, along with a membership fee of $50 per semester. Please follow the club's official Instagram, @syracusekendo, for the most up-to-date information. Feel free to direct message the team on Instagram or email syracusekendo@gmail.com for any Kendo or club-related inquiries.Â
