The Richard Van Winkle Award is presented to the Syracuse University Men’s Ice Hockey player, alumnus, or staff member
“who has demonstrated leadership on and off the ice, has made significant contribution to the development of the team, and the maintenance of its legacy”.
Richard Van Winkle, SU ‘63 was the founder of Modern Era Hockey at Syracuse University in 1959. He recruited players, negotiated rink space and ice time, raised operating funds, and served as the club representative to the University. He also co-founded the Finger Lakes Collegiate Hockey League. It was because of his efforts that the Syracuse University Men’s Hockey fought itself into existence despite numerous and constant obstacles. He set the example and tone for the club and it’s future leaders. Since the club’s establishment a number of committed individuals have worked ceaselessly to protect, promote, and grow the legacy of Syracuse University Men’s Hockey. The Richard Van Winkle Award was established as the highest honor by which SU Men’s Hockey could recognize the contribution of these persons.
The Van Winkle Award honoree is selected by a committee of former recipients based on evidence provided and is presented each year by a member of the Van Winkle Family.
