Lance Davis and Amy Morris Davis were recognized with the 2021 Van Winkle Award for their exceptional leadership, collaboration, and lasting impact on the Syracuse University Men’s Hockey program. During a critical period in the early 1990s, Lance, serving as Team Captain and Club President, played a pivotal role in stabilizing and elevating the organization. He led the transition from a loosely structured, player-run team to a more disciplined and professional program, helping to establish standards of play, improve internal operations, and ultimately preserve the team’s standing within its league.
Working alongside him, Amy Morris (who later married Lance and became Amy Davis) served as team manager and was instrumental in building the administrative backbone of the program. Known for her organizational expertise, she developed and implemented systems for game-day operations, roster management, publicity, and overall team logistics. Her ability to bring structure and efficiency complemented Lance’s leadership, and together they created a cohesive vision that aligned the program’s operational and competitive goals. Their partnership was central to the program’s survival, growth, and increasing credibility during this transformative era.
Since their time at Syracuse, Lance and Amy have continued to demonstrate a shared commitment to leadership and community. Lance has built a career in law and public service, while Amy has become an educational leader, serving as a principal supporting students with learning differences. Together, they have remained active in their community and supportive of the Syracuse hockey program, including contributing to its historical preservation. Their combined legacy of service, leadership, and dedication makes them truly deserving honorees of the Richard Van Winkle Award.
