After a strong freshman season, he helped lead Syracuse to the 1976–1977 Finger Lakes Collegiate Hockey League Championship. Known for his resilience and sense of humor, Merrell was a dependable presence in net and a valued teammate.

After graduation, he continued his athletic career in semi-professional hockey while also transitioning into coaching.
